No drives out to dark skies. Just look up, and not even every night: it returns every month with the same phases, at predictable hours, and lets you fail as many times as it takes. The classic mistake has a precise cause. The camera sees a scene that is almost entirely black and tries to brighten it: it pushes everything it can push, and the lunar disc, the only bright thing in the frame, burns out. The full Moon covers about half a degree of sky: in a wide-angle frame it is a bright speck of confetti, and the two correct exposures, one for the disc and one for the city below, sit worlds apart. Expose for the landscape and the Moon burns; expose for the Moon and the landscape sinks into black. You have to pick a protagonist. A silhouette of rooftops under a well-exposed disc is an honest photo, and often a beautiful one; the giant flawless moons over monuments that circulate online come from serious telephoto lenses, carefully computed vantage points, or composites.
